Walter’s House, the Residential Substance Abuse Treatment and Transitional Housing Center for Men and Women, was established to help individuals exchange homelessness and addiction for a life full of hope and a future pressing on toward the goal.

Pastor Walter Zeck was a founder of the Yolo Wayfarer Center, a well-known and respected member of the Woodland community. His heart was to reach out to all, but especially to those broken and hurt by the cares of this world and share with them a new hope and peace and their potential for a more fulfilling future.

The people that Walter’s House serves are individuals who are homeless or who struggle with use, abuse or dependence on alcohol and/or other drugs. Any person who is challenged by homelessness or addiction and wishes to make changes in their life can benefit from our program.

The Program
The program is intensive in nature,
requiring each guest to participate fully
in a 40 hour per week program
structure. This structure supports
accountability and teaches individuals
that they are responsible for their
behaviors, attitudes and actions.
The program includes:
 ∙ Orientation
∙ Drug and alcohol education groups
 ∙ Process groups
 ∙ Life skills
 ∙ Relapse prevention
 ∙ 12-Step study
 ∙ Faith-based curriculum*
 ∙ Bible Study
 ∙ Participation in facility cleanliness
 ∙ Scheduled recreation activities
 ∙ Individual counseling
 ∙ Case management
 ∙ Employment readiness
 ∙ Drug Testing
∙ After Care / Alumni Groups
 ∙ 30 - 60 - 90 day Programs

* Alternative curriculum is available.

The Process
Each guest participates in a Screening, Intake, Orientation and Assessment prior to entry into the program. We believe that a person's ability to recover begins with an appropriate assessment and individualized plan that will benefit the guest. Our strong community partnerships allow us to make referrals to alternative programs when appropriate.

The Staff
The staff at Walter's House is available 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. Our regular business hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM. We have counseling staff, treatment technicians and transitional living case managers to assist guests in achieving their goals in employment, housing and recovery.

Our counselors are trained and educated in substance abuse treatment. All guests are assigned a primary counselor to assist them in creating a treatment plan and achieving goals through weekly individual sessions. The treatment technicians assist in case management and daily operation of the facility.

Our professional staff is caring and friendly, while maintaining a high standard of ethics and boundaries. Our staff cook creates a healthy menu serving lunch and dinner meals for guests. All staff is CPR certified.

The Facility
Walter's House is a 5000 square foot facility built in 2003 with support from the State of California Emergency Housing Assistance Programs, City of Woodland Community Programs, City of Woodland Community Development Block Grant funding, Rumsey Community Foundation, and other community foundation and private donors. Our beautiful mission style architecture creates an environment of safety and peace. The gate courtyard is covered in grass and shrubbery offering natural beauty and a perfect setting for guests to pray, meditate or ponder the changes taking place in their lives.

The room accommodations are just as serene. Each room has a restroom, shower, desk, and beds with individual closet space and lockers for each guest. There is a dining area, recreation room, and group rooms on site. Counseling offices offer confidentiality in which staff provides therapeutic treatment.
  Singles Program
The singles’ shelter program provides 14 transitional beds and 30 beds for residential treatment. The program serves individuals who are homeless, including those who struggle with mental illness and substance abuse. This clean and sober living environment focuses on providing support and resources for addressing the challenges that prevent escaping homelessness. Life skills, 12-Step, budgeting, employment search, and house meetings are required components.

Family Program
The family shelter program houses
homeless families in housing units
throughout the community as they gain skills to end the cycle of homelessness. Our current sites provide: 10 apartments, 4 three-bedroom duplexes, and a 5-bedroom women’s house. Support services, case management and life skills assist our families in becoming stable.

Transitional Housing Orientations
Required orientations are held every
Tuesday at 9:00 AM sharp. Life skills
classes follow from 9:30 - 10:30 AM at
the United Methodist Church:
212 Second St, Woodland.
Child care is provided.
