Yolo Wayfarer Center Emergency Shelter Open House
October 19, 2006
Featuring “Empty Bowls” Luncheon
You are invited to help open the doors of the Yolo Wayfarer Center’s new
year-round homeless shelter and to raise awareness of hunger on October 19th.
After many years of planning and hard work, the year round Emergency Shelter will
open at Fourth and North streets in Woodland, October 2006. To celebrate and give
the community an opportunity to tour the facility, Yolo Wayfarer Center is
presenting an Empty Bowls lunch on October 19th with two available seating times.
The goal of the event is to raise awareness of the need for the year round shelter
and to raise money to fight hunger in Woodland and Yolo County. The date has
chosen to complement World Food Day on October 16th, 2006.
Yolo Wayfarer Center has been serving the homeless and hungry of this community for more than 20 years. Humble beginnings from a grassroots
organization of compassionate community members has grown to the current
accomplishments of serving more than 27,000 hot meals per year in addition to
providing groceries to the low income and needy. Wayfarer has expanded over the
years to include emergency and transitional shelter for the homeless and address
addiction and mental health needs of the most vulnerable, providing support to
find employment, building personal skills and accessing permanent housing.
The basic premise of the Empty Bowls event is simple: guests select one
handmade bowl (donated by local artists) as a reminder of hunger in the world and
are served a simple soup lunch in exchange for a cash donation. They are asked
to keep their bowl as a reminder of the meal’s purpose. Each time they take the
bowl from the cupboard they will be reminded that someone’s bowl is always empty
and that on this one occasion they helped alleviate hunger and could choose to do
so again at any time.
The Empty bowls luncheon will be held from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. on
Thursday, October 19th. Tickets will be available for sale in August.
